At the university, students participated in various workshops. The visit is part of the activities of Imatra junior university Universoma.

All Imatra 8th graders participated yesterday and today in the Imatra Junior University Universoma workshops. The workshops were organized at LUT University's Lappeenranta campus.

The theme of the workshops was Living Environments of the Future. The workshops were organized by LUT University and Imatran Vesi, Imatran Lämpö, Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy and Imatran urban development.

In the workshops, we got to know about various issues related to the environment and technology on a practical level.

In the Imatra Water workshop, students got to know the process of water: where water comes from and where it goes.

—The students were very involved in the day. They have familiarized themselves with the topic in advance at school, so they already had the basic information before visiting the university, water supply engineer Anu Nikulainen Imatran Vedette says.

In the Imatra Lämmö workshop, we focused on the production of district heat. The students were able to do a moisture analysis for wood chips. The production economy engineering students taught half of them with the help of Lego blocks how production starts from the warehouse and ends up as a finished house for the customers.

The visits were successful after a long break

Workshop days on the LUT campus are part of the activities of Imatra junior university Universoma.

Due to corona restrictions, it has not been possible to carry out visits in the previous two years. This spring, the visits were finally successful.

— We are really happy that we can receive school children again. It's great that we can offer young people such experiences, coordinator of LUT Junior University Laura Jouhkimo rejoices.

Visits are also expected at Imatra.

— We are really happy that the students will be able to get to know the university campus again. We have really committed people involved, and the whole group commits really well to the curriculum, head of education and youth Minna Rovio says.

Universoma is Imatra's junior university

A visit to the LUT University campus is one part of Universoma's activities.

In addition to the workshop days, students get to know things related to natural sciences and technology in other ways. For example, in the fall, the 8th graders got to know Vuoksi's waterways on fish day. The 4th graders have also familiarized themselves with Vuoksi's waterways as part of their education.

Universoma's goal is to bring the natural sciences and the academic world closer to everyday life in primary and secondary schools. It works in cooperation with LUT Junior University, Imatran Vede, Imatran Lämpö Oy, Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy and Mitra Imatran Rakennuttaja.
