Lots of particles in the air

Release
24.3.2022 09:47
In addition to street dust, fine particle concentrations are also high.

In the last few days, there has been a lot of particles raised by street dust and long-distance transport coming from the south. The air also looks hazy.

- Yesterday, the numerical value of 2.5 ug/m15 of the daily guideline value for small particles, or PM3, given by the WHO was exceeded at all PM2.5 measuring stations in our network, both in Imatra and Lappeenranta. The crossings were the first this year. The guideline value is allowed to be exceeded 3 times during the year. However, the concentrations of respirable particles, or PM10, have not yet exceeded the daily limit value of 50 ug/m3 at any measuring station, says the environmental protection planner Riikka Litmanen From the Imatra region's environmental initiative.

The wind has been blowing from the southwest for the past few days. The air quality has varied from good to bad in the area of the measurement network. Starting tomorrow, according to the weather forecast, the weather will change, and the predicted rains and sleet will improve the air quality.

There has been a server problem in the operation of the website and mobile app that tells about air quality measurements in the South Karelia region, so information through them has now been problematic. Hopefully, the website will be available again as soon as possible. Currently, air quality can be monitored on the website maintained by the Finnish Meteorological Institute Air quality - Institute of Meteorology
