Imatra's goal is to strive for carbon neutrality by 2030.

Imatra has had its greenhouse emissions reduced by 38 percent from 2006 to 2017. The reduction was partly due to the new biofuel-using district heating plant commissioned by Imatra Lämpö Oy in 2016.

Imatra's goal is to strive for carbon neutrality by 2030. Imatra's newly approved climate program presents actions and measures for the city and city companies of Imatra, as well as for companies and communities in the region, to curb climate change and prepare for climate change.

The six main goals of the program are:
1. We will increase the use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency.
2. 80 percent of Imatra's traffic runs on renewable energy and public transport will be carbon neutral by 2030.
3. At Imatra, informed and cost-effective choices and decisions are made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
4. Consumption and material choices are climate wise.
5. Promote the production of biofuels and grow carbon sinks.
6. Prepare for the effects of Climate Change.

Imatra has joined the network of Hinku municipalities in the summer of 2019 and at the same time enabled the entire province of South Karelia to become a Hinku county.
