Imatra has been selected as the subject of Lappset's next design competition. The competition is not yet binding to build.

Imatra and Lappset Group Oy are organizing an idea competition to renovate the area of the former nursery in Ukonniemi. Tentatively, the design area of the competition is limited to Ottelukatu and Lammassaareentie.

The idea competition seeks new views on how the area could be developed to better serve city residents and tourists. The goal is also to increase the area's park assets.

─ In the general plan, the area is an area for tourism and sports services. The area should be developed in that direction. I would hope that everyone from kid to grandma could find something to do in this area for free. For example, a sledding hill, wading pool, small playgrounds, trick tracks, skating rink, trampoline, mini arena, bush maze or whatever the designers come up with would be suitable for the area, city surveyor Blue Pekkala says.

The Ukonniemi area was selected as the target of the design competition because of its versatility.

─ Sports and exercise facility construction has so far focused on supporting athletes and people who exercise a lot. Through this design competition, ideas are being sought for an environment that, even in terms of landscape, encourages people and families who exercise little to try and experience the joy of exercise, concept manager for exercise products Aarni Mertala From Lappset describes.

The competition is aimed at landscape design students. According to Mertala, the area defined as a competition target by the city of Imatra offers students a real and challenging target, where students have to acquire knowledge in a multidisciplinary way and learn during the process how to combine different and intersecting activities in regional planning.

This spring, the city and Lappset will define the competition area in more detail and the rules. The competition officially starts next fall. The winner will be announced in February 2020.

─ The competition does not bind the city to invest at this stage. We are now looking for good ideas for the area. Perhaps ideas could be implemented piece by piece in the future, Pekkala emphasizes.

The city is committed to participating in the organization of the competition.
