Tainionkoski was born around a factory concentration that utilized the power of Vuoksi. In recent decades, the focus of industry has shifted to Kaukopää. Tainionkoski still has a hydropower plant and Stora Enso's research center.
The area is bordered in the east by Vuoki and in the north by Saimaa and in the west by the Imatra spa. The large area of Tainionkoski includes many smaller areas with their own special characteristics; Ukonniemi, Karhumäki, Karhukallio, Tinttikallio, Tuulikallio, Lempukka, Hossukka, Suo, Mustalampi and Niskalampi.
Tainionkoski is characterized by an old building population dominated by small houses, mixed with new small houses and small concentrations of newer houses. Taininkoski's old school is now operational as a house of the arts. The city's services in the area are also nursery ja industrial worker's housing museum.
