The most significant soil formation in the Imatra region is the first Salpauselkä, born on the edge of the ancient continental glacier. Its best destinations are located on the hiking trails of the area stretching from Lammassaari to Vuoksenniska. The De Geer moraine flocks, which are very distinct in their height pattern but difficult to see in the terrain, are also special in terms of their birth history, some of which are located almost in the center of the city. Mellonlahti with its trail network offers a representative selection of landforms created by river erosion. You can get a good overview of the area from the Mellonmäki hill viewpoint. The best rock bottom destination is the old bed of Imatrankoski with its extensive open cliffs. They are complemented by the Imatran State Hotel, completed in 1903. Local stone types have been used in the stone structures of the building's facades.
The sites of the Imatra georoute are proof of the landscape's long history. In their time perspective, our own time shrinks to a fleeting moment on the way to the unknown. A hiker traveling through geological time to landforms of different ages notices that only constant change is permanent in nature.
