Aino Tikka uses the bus connections between Lappeenranta and Imatra as well as Lappeenranta's local transport for her work trips. His phone has the Lappeenrantan buses smart application downloaded, which tells him in real time where the city's local buses are currently going. - When I'm coming from work at Imatra, I look at where my own bus is going and decide the stop I want to get off at.

Aino Tikka, who travels from Lappeenranta to Imatra on weekdays, likes the carefree nature of the bus service. The cities of Imatra and Lappeenranta are involved in the project, the aim of which is to increase the share of sustainable means of transport, especially in traffic between cities.

The walk is for those who live in Lappeenranta Only Tikan the primary option when he starts his journey to work on weekday mornings.

- Walking to the center takes no more than 30 minutes. I usually always walk, but in a hurry or in bad weather, I might also go by bus. In the summer, I used a lot of rental electric scooters, he says.

However, a good two-kilometer walk outside is a warm-up, because from the center of Lappeenranta, the journey continues by long-distance bus towards Imatra. Tika's commute is a good 40 kilometers in total, and it takes about 1,5 hours.

- Traveling is surprisingly smooth. After all, three hours a day is quite a long time, but it belongs to my everyday life and is part of it. I don't really think about it, I listen to music and podcasts, read the news and browse social media.

For Tika, sustainable modes of transportation are both a value choice and a solution that makes everyday life easier, because she likes the ease and safety of public transport in all weathers.

- I don't have to be sharper at the wheel, and snowstorms don't slow things down either. I don't even own a car anymore. I have a driver's license, but it saves me a lot of stress because I don't have to worry about things like car maintenance and repairs. In addition, I save money, and nature also thanks me, says Tikka.

Sustainable modes of transportation between the two cities

In addition to the bus, it is possible to cover the distance between Lappeenranta and Imatra in a sustainable way by traveling both by train and by bike. The distance between the cities is about 36 kilometers, depending on the route.

The journey takes about an hour by bus and half an hour by train. By bike, the trip takes an average of two hours, and at the same time you get your dose of outdoor activities for the day.

The cities of Imatra and Lappeenranta encourage their residents to travel sustainably both between cities and on other journeys. The aim of the joint state aid project for the control of movement between the cities, which is currently underway, is to increase the share of sustainable means of transportation, especially for trips between cities.

Hello, Arkena, when I was young,…

Hey,

As an everyday person, young, without a family and working as a day worker, you can certainly manage to move around very well.

However, also pay attention to the older, aging population, families, but especially shift workers, those traveling and working on weekends and people of different ages traveling in the area. Note the smooth train-bus connections to various destinations. Pay attention to tourist centers such as Rauha, Ukonniemi, general sports and exercise venues, where you can get decent bus connections all the way to your destination (especially Rauha where buses don't get there very well). Bus connections should be increased in the evenings and weekends, as well as during holidays and vacations. Pay particular attention to the current condition of the Imatra central station: there will soon be a need for a warm and clean waiting area for bus and train passengers. For example, the blue house in Mansikkala should be temporarily used as a warm waiting area, (perhaps a small cafe there), if no other proposal has yet been received. The untidiness is terrible at the current station where mold smells and the cleanliness is terrible. It is unsafe in the cold and dark, there has been a lot of feedback about this. Thank you!
