The South Karelia Waste Board and its office holders perform the official tasks of organizing waste management according to the Waste Act, which are:
deciding on waste reception and processing locations
decisions on matters related to the transport of waste
decisions on municipal waste management regulations and deviations from them
approval of waste tariffs
imposing waste fees, making payments, deciding on rationalization and handling reminders
collection of waste fees
decisions to deviate from belonging to municipal waste management in individual cases
keeping the waste transport register
approval of the quality requirements (service level) of the municipality's waste management services
other official decisions related to municipal waste management
Organization and supervision of municipal waste management
Residential waste management services are organized by the municipalities. In South Karelia, Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy is responsible for the practical implementation by decision of the municipalities. Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy is owned by the municipalities of Etelä-Karlia. The waste company manages and bids for waste transport (e.g. collection from properties, emptying of regional collection points and transport of waste for energy recovery, material recovery and final disposal).
The following are responsible for monitoring waste management in South Karelia:
Environmental authority of the Imatra region (Imatra, Parikkala, Rautjärvi and Ruokolahti)
Environmental authority of the Lappeenranta region (Lappeenranta, Lemi, Savitaipale and Taipalsaari)
Environmental authority of Luumäki municipality
The waste management supervisory authority is generally responsible for the supervision of waste management in the following matters, for example: littering, joining the waste management and compliance with waste management regulations. In our region, waste management is also monitored by the Southeast Finland ELY Center.
