Apple pomace, leftover apples and apples with mummy disease are biowaste that is still utilized.

The apple harvest is at its most abundant in early autumn. When the harvest is more than you need, the extra apples should be taken to the Hyödyksi station. In this way, the apple waste ends up being further utilized.

- Apple waste is bio-waste. According to the Waste Act, all types of waste, including bio-waste, must be utilized. If the waste cannot be used, it should be recycled, says the environmental engineer Carita Kattainen From the environmental department of the Imatra region.

Raw apple juice, surplus apples, and apples with mummy disease can be delivered to the Höydyksi station. There is a separate pallet or waste container for apples at the station, where they should be put as they are, not in plastic bags.

- Apples can be taken to all Hyödyksi stations for free, says Kattainen.

Small amounts of healthy apples can be composted in your own composter. You should not put large amounts of apple waste in the composter, because it fills the composter unnecessarily and the compost becomes too moist. Due to too much moisture, composting is disturbed.

Apple waste smells and increases the eating opportunities for rats

If apple waste ends up in nature, it increases odor nuisance and eating opportunities for rats, collects wasps around it and attracts pests.

- The right place for apple waste is Hyödyksi station. Taking waste to city or private lands is prohibited, summarizes Kattainen.

The disposal of apple waste is the responsibility of the property owner and the land owner.

- We have received reports, for example, of piles of surplus apples in the forest. Disposing of them is the responsibility of the landowner when the litterer is unknown, says Kattainen.

Raking waste for compost

In autumn, various raking waste, such as tree leaves, also accumulates in the yards.

- Leaves belong to garden waste, which can be composted in your own garden composter or taken to Hyödyksi stations that receive garden waste, says Kattainen.
