The renovation of the central station is progressing on schedule
The station's renovation is in full swing, both inside and out. Concrete is being poured in front of the main doors and paving is being installed.
The new third-floor waiting area is being tiled, and the front groundwork for concrete pouring is being done on the platform side. Surface treatment is currently taking place indoors.
The lobby, toilets and corridors will be completed by October. Negotiations are currently underway to lease the commercial premises.
— The finishing work on the first and second floor commercial premises is awaiting tenants. At this stage, the building services and foundation works are complete, says Pasi Huoponen from Mitra Imatran Rakennuttaja.
The entire building services at the station have been renewed.
The building services, which date back to the 1970s, have been completely renovated. The property now has new electricity, heating, air conditioning, drainage, water pipes and machinery.
— New, modern equipment also requires more space. Fortunately, this property was well-utilized, and the new machinery has been located in former warehouse and office spaces, among other places, Huoponen says.
All surfaces that suffered moisture damage have been cleaned and recoated.
— In practice, this is like a new building after it is completed, Huoponen says.
The station has been renovated to ensure accessibility for both the physically and visually impaired. In addition, the customer elevator has been renovated and more customer toilets have been built at the station.
Some old things have also been preserved where possible. The mural in the first-floor lobby will remain unchanged, as will the stairs to the new waiting room on the third floor. The equipment and appearance of the second-floor sauna department will be preserved in good condition, in its 1970s appearance.
The central station is a fenced construction site until October 2025.
The access ramp leading to the platform at the Vuoksi end of the station will open for use when the station opens.
- The slope is in construction site use, and therefore closed to other traffic, says Huoponen.
The ramp belongs to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and is not included in the station renovation.
