The online service of the city of Imatra was renewed

Release
29.9.2022 09:42
Along with the Drupal base update, a new look, more accessible pages and a translation service.

The renewed online service of the city of Imatra has been put into use. The Imatra.fi website has a lot of familiar features, but there are also some new elements. The reform also applies to the pages of the city's sub-sites of the Imatra region's environmental action, Kiinteistö and regional maintenance Kipa, Imatra water and the provincial waste management authority, as well as the intranet used by the city's personnel.

─ The renewal started because it was time for us to change the site from Drupal 7 to a newer Drupal 9 version. At the same time, we slightly developed the appearance and content structures. For example, accessibility requirements can now be better taken into account, the communication and inclusion expert who was one of the responsible persons for the website project Heikki Laine says.

The new online service has the option of commenting on bulletins and a clearer contact information search than before.

Translation service as an experiment

In addition to refreshing the overall look of the site, an essential change is also an experiment with the translation service. The city of Imatra's website, including the sub-sites, no longer produces separate language version pages, but the user can choose the language they want from the top of the page. Translations are made by Google translator.

─ We are aware that there are risks associated with this experiment, but during the corona period, we found that traditional pages produced as translations do not work as expected. Producing translations takes time. Many official instructions already had time to change in a few days before receiving the translation, Director of Communications Liisa Hupli-Oinonen says.

Translation applications have developed in a few years. In addition, they offer a wide range of different languages.

─ Of course, grammatical errors, for example, can be expected in translations. We will inform you in the translated versions how they were made, says Hupli-Oinonen.

Generaxion Oy has been responsible for the technical implementation of the site renewal.

The city is interested in hearing feedback on the website renewal. It can be sent to communicationatimatra.fi (communication[at]imatra[dot]fi)

If the device has a dark…

If the device has a dark theme, the site will not look good. Hopefully this will also be optimized for the dark theme in the future.
