The city of Imatra reserves an area for the production of synthetic aviation fuel for the Norwegian company Norsk-e-Fuel

5.12.2024 09:00
The company is backed by, among others, the airline Norwegian and several European technology companies. Zoning of the area has been started in June.

The city of Imatra and the Norwegian company Norsk-e-Fuel have signed a reservation agreement for the reservation of a plot of about 20 hectares in the Pelkola area, in the immediate vicinity of the Ovako steel mill. In addition, the contract includes an option for another area of almost the same size.

The company's goal is to produce at least 80 tons of synthetic jet fuel annually in the region in order to meet the EU's renewable jet fuel goals. Norsk-e-Fuel already has contracts for the supply of fuel to the airline Norwegian and Cargolux. In addition to Norwegian, the company is backed by five other strategic investors: SMS Group (Paul Wurth), Sunfire, Valinor, Climeworks and lux-airport.

Earlier this fall, Norsk-e-Fuel has announced a slightly smaller area reservation for a ready-to-build plot in Rauma. Before expanding to Finland, the company has focused on promoting its first facility in Norway Mosjøenissa. The project is currently in the planning phase.

Station plan update in progress

At Imatra, the update of Pelkola's site plan started last summer, and according to the agreement, the goal is to complete the plan by the summer of 2026. The city is also preparing for the solutions required by the facility, for example in terms of water supply.

If implemented, the plant investment would be very significant financially, and the plant would also be a significant employer in the region.

— We are very grateful that we get to develop the area with Norsk-e-Fuel, because the company's background is very strong, considering that it is a relatively new and developing market. The Pelkola area combines an excellent logistical location, electrical infrastructure and municipal technology. The agreement signed now and already prepared for a longer time is one important step, but there is still plenty of work before a possible final investment decision. At this point, I want to thank everyone who participated in the preparatory work, states the mayor Matias Hilden.

—Imatra offers us a great opportunity to increase the production of electric fuels in the future. As the area is currently largely in a natural state, it will take a little longer to develop it. However, the area has significant potential and it strengthens our production portfolio. We look forward to continuing the good cooperation with local partners and are excited to be part of the industrial development of the region," says Norsk e-Fuel's CCO Lars Bjørn Larsen.

The agreement's entry into force still requires the approval of the Imatra city council. The matter is scheduled to be brought to the council's consideration on 16.12. to the meeting to be held. The Urban Development Board approved the contract on 19.11. in its held meeting.
