The city's street lighting will be improved in several areas this year
The improvement of the city's street lighting is divided into three areas: construction of new lighting, maintenance, and renovation of the old network. The goal is to increase safety and comfort with energy-efficient and modern solutions.
New lighting
New lighting is currently being built on the riverside path on the east side of Vuoksi between Puomikuja and Imatrankoskentie. At the same time, the area lighting of Kanavapuisto will be completed, as well as the complete renovation of the existing lighting network of Kanavakatu, Kanava-aukio and Kanavakuja.
— The aim is to complete the earthworks before the Imatra Festival, and the lampposts and lamps will be installed before schools start, says the city's maintenance engineer. Kaisa Pohjola.
New street lighting will also be built along the Vuoksi River, on the pedestrian traffic route east of Tainionkoskentie, between Virranpuisto and Kotipolku.
The renovation of the street lighting on the east side of Viipurintie in Meltola will begin in autumn 2025. The work will be carried out in cooperation with the grid company and will include:
• installation of new metal poles and lighting fixtures on existing bases on Haikolankatu, Onkimiehenkatu, Kiviportinkatu and Hernekallionkatu.
• old lighting networks based on wooden poles will be removed to the extent that new lighting is put into use.
The Meltola project will continue until 2026.
Street lighting maintenance work in summer and autumn 2025
Maintenance work is being carried out in the following areas:
• Nuijasuonkatu, Sarakuja and Viraskorvi pedestrian crossing: renovation of old lighting.
• The blue accent lighting on the Siitola overpass will be renewed during the summer at a date to be announced later.
Renovation of the street lighting network
LED renovations will continue throughout the city in the autumn. The renovation will replace old discharge lamps with energy-efficient LED lamps. At the same time, tilted lamp posts will be straightened and missing lamps will be installed on existing posts.
