The module rented as additional space will be put into use in Linnala at the beginning of January.

In September, the staff, students and guardians of the new school center in Mansikkala were asked about their first experiences with the wooden school premises.

The answers praised the light, the yard and the indoor air. The city also received a lot of constructive development ideas. Already at that time, corrective measures were outlined based on these answers.

─ Now is the time for a break. We will tell you which of those actions have already been taken and which are still in progress, space and safety manager Sami Turunen says.

Perhaps the biggest wish for change concerned new movable walls, which could be used to calm the learning environment. The walls were promised at the beginning of the year so that the installations would be done during the Christmas holidays.

─ Unfortunately, the supplier of the walls was not able to produce the transfer walls in this time. We won't be able to install until the winter holiday week, Turunen regrets.

The module will be available in January

During the fall vacation, the acoustics have already been improved with new curtain solutions for the high school's large space and acoustic panels for all light yards, as well as adjusting the surround sound system.

Corona has hindered the normal use of the school. The open learning environment has not been able to be utilized in the desired way, when the groups are not allowed to mix with each other.

The city has also stated that due to the corona situation and the larger than predicted number of students in the Mansikkala area, it will rent additional space from the Linnala field module from the beginning of January.

The module will be ready for use the week before Christmas and will be furnished during the Christmas holidays, so the first users will be able to enter the premises right after Epiphany.

Spaces are completed through experiences

The premises of the Mansikkala school center have been prepared to be modified all the time.

─ As we have said before, the Mansikkala school center will only be completed through user feedback. This will take at least one semester, maybe more because of the corona, because now we don't live a normal everyday life in any way, head of educational services Minna Rovio says.

Turunen reminds us that making the space ready together means that feedback is given and acted upon.

─ The next user survey will be carried out after the winter vacation for the entire staff of the building, including early childhood education, evening users, Eksote and youth services.

Based on the feedback survey, the promised changes and their progress

1. For example, add movable wall solutions to open spaces.

  • The original plan for the movable additional walls was that they could be installed during the Christmas holidays. However, the supplier of the walls was not able to deliver the structures on this schedule, so the first walls for the E-block, i.e. the preschool and elementary school side, will be installed during the ski vacation. The rest of the movable walls will be installed during next summer.

2. We hope for improvements in sound dampening.

  • During the fall vacation, acoustic panels were installed in the light yards, which clearly improved the soundscape. The surround sound system is constantly adjusted according to the functionality.

3. Passing through teaching facilities to another should be prevented / reduced.

  • Instructions for passing through the premises have been given and some changes to the routes will be implemented next summer.

4. Meals (for example, some food sometimes runs out, the space feels cramped at peak times, cleanliness of the dish room)

  • There has been a discussion with Saimaa's support services (Satu) about the times when some food has run out. By staggering more meal times, we have already managed to get more space in the canteen. In terms of food services, an extensive, targeted at all school centers has been made and announced inquiry, on the basis of which we are thinking about whether it would be possible to calm down the eating of small students with, for example, sermi.

5. The air conditioning needs to be adjusted (in some rooms the air conditioning is not sufficient).

  • Additional adjustments have been made during the autumn holidays and the environmental measurements show no deviations, but are within the S2 limit values of the indoor air classification

6. Temperature regulation (too cool in some rooms, cold floor)

  • The temperatures of the floor controls are adjusted when the air cools down enough to the freezing point. Radiators will be installed in the light yards during the Christmas holidays.

7. The WLAN network does not work sufficiently everywhere.

  • The school uses a wireless LAN for teaching, which we have improved based on our first experiences. We are currently monitoring the impact of new student devices on network performance.
  • There have been problems with mobile phone operators' coverage and internet connections (e.g. private use of students' phones). All the largest mobile phone operators have started measures to confirm the affiliations. In the coming weeks, Telia/Dna coverage will also improve.

8. All users, especially in the evening, do not comply with the shoeless requirement.

  • Signs have been installed on the front doors to remind people not to wear shoes.

9. Deficiencies in cleaning, for example in toilets.

  • Cleaning has been improved. Regarding cleaning, quality rounds have been carried out. The users have gone through joint planning with the cleaners on cleaning efficiency and scheduling.

10. The interval clock is missing.

  • The bells are ringing again.

11. I hope the children have more spider swings in the school yard.

  • The planning of the yard is underway and the places for the swings are being planned. The swings can be put in place during the spring.

12. Why is Kostinpuisto not used as an intermediate class area?

  • The area will be used under teacher supervision, in the future also during long breaks.

13. More space for mopeds.

  • Moped spaces have been added in the fall before the autumn holidays.

14. More bike racks.

  • Users have been instructed about the locations of the bike racks. If there is still a need for new racks, their purchase can be considered.

15. Dangerous situations in the underpass, driving hard and how does it hurt, can anything be done?

  • Alikulu's paintings have been done and the signs have been installed. I hope this helps.

16. A high fence is needed for the entire section of the ball field, so that the balls do not bounce on staff cars to make dents.

  • The need for a fence is being investigated.

17. Suojati to be provided at the intersection of Ruokosuonkatu and Karjaportikatu.

  • Paintings on the crosswalk could not be done due to the autumn rains, but the matter will be taken care of as soon as the spring weather permits. The safety road signs are already there.

18. Parents make U-turns on Koulukatu and at the Ruokosuontie intersection on Tainionkoskentie when bringing children, can I get a U-turn ban?

  • Signs prohibiting U-turns have been installed on Koulukatu.

19. When will the parking lot paintings be delivered to the Crimean parking lot?

  • The paintings could not be done because of the autumn rains, but the matter will be taken care of as soon as the spring weather permits.
