South Karelia's waste management regulations require bio-waste to be sorted in all residential and leisure properties in the entire South Karelia region. If there is no valid transport service for bio-waste, it must be composted in an appropriate composter.
COMPOSTING NOTICE
According to the Waste Act (646/2011), the holder of the waste must notify the waste management authority about small-scale processing of bio-waste on the property, i.e. composting in practice. Properties can compost food, garden and dry toilet waste but only food waste composting should be reported. The notification must be made within two months of starting composting.
The notification obligation also applies to leisure properties and properties that compost only part of the year. For the joint composter of several properties, one notification is sufficient, in which all users of the composter are notified.
As composting continues, the information must be updated every five years. The waste management authority must also be notified of the cessation of composting within two months of the cessation of operations on the property.
MAKING A COMPOSTING DECLARATION
The notification can be made:
- Through the electronic transaction of Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy. (Making a notification does not require logging in to online transactions. The notification can be found at the bottom of the main page of the online transaction).
- By filling out the attached printable form and returning it to the South Karelia waste management authority according to the instructions on the form. You can also inquire about paper forms from the municipalities' customer services.
The composting notification must be made by 31.12.2023 December XNUMX.
WHY ARE COMPOSTING REPORTS COLLECTED?
The notification obligation is based on the revised Waste Act. Composting notifications provide information on the amount of biowaste composted by households. The information is used e.g. when evaluating the implementation of recycling in Finland. The information is collected in the composting register maintained by the waste management authority. The information to be reported must be in accordance with the waste regulation (978/2021).
With the help of the register, the monitoring of waste management is improved, and with the help of notifications, it is also possible to ensure the proper handling of bio-waste, so that, for example, rat problems do not increase.
