The organization of waste management is regulated by the Waste Act (646/2011). Regional regulations specifying the Waste Act for the area of jurisdiction are issued in the South Karelia Waste Management Regulations drawn up under the Waste Act. As their name suggests, they are mandatory, not recommendations. The aim of the waste management regulations is to prevent harm and dangers to health or the environment caused by waste or waste management, and to promote compliance with the order of priority. The waste management regulations are issued by the South Karelia Waste Board.
Waste management regulations apply to all properties intended for housing, leisure and municipal service and administrative activities. Therefore, the owners and occupiers of the properties in question, as well as other operators, where applicable, must comply with the waste management regulations.
Waste management regulations contain many practical matters related to waste management, such as obligations regarding separately sorted waste types, property-specific obligations for recyclable waste containers, and waste container designs, their placement, and emptying intervals.
