Official mail will now be sent via suomi.fi

On 11 March 2026, the Parliament approved amendments to the law, according to which authorities will in future send notifications pursuant to Section 54 of the Administrative Procedure Act primarily digitally. The law will enter into force on 14 April 2026. The South Karelia Waste Management Authority has also switched to using electronic official messages. 

In practice, this means that notifications sent by the South Karelia Waste Management Authority will in future be sent electronically to adult users without the recipient's separate consent who have activated the suomi.fi messaging service. The reform does not apply to citizens who do not do business digitally and do not use suomi.fi identification. It also does not apply to minors or those under guardianship. If the service has not been activated, the mail will arrive as usual by letter. The use of Suomi.fi messaging is free of charge and completely voluntary. You can always return to paper mail if you wish.
