Five pedestrian crossings in Imatra will receive new Välkky warning devices in the summer of 2025
Local residents were able to influence the placement of Välkky safety signs. The survey was open 17.2 - 9.3.2025. 116 people participated in the survey and 242 locations were proposed for Välkky.
The new Välkyts will be installed at the following pedestrian crossings and intersections:
• Viipurintie / Helsingintie
• Korvenkannantie / Keskuskatu
• Joutsenonkatu / Karhunkatu
• Vuoksenniskantie
• Valvatinkatu / Torikatu

— We are really happy that our Välkky survey interested our residents and we received a lot of responses. In addition to marking the location, the residents of Imatra actively provided verbal feedback, says the maintenance engineer. Kaisa Pohjola.
After review, five items were selected as flash items. In addition to the items that received the most votes, the selection was influenced by whether the proposal met the criteria for installing flash items.
— Välkky is best suited for the five selected locations, and for the other proposed locations we can take other measures to improve traffic safety. These include reducing speed, clearing obstacles and reviewing traffic arrangements, for example through the placement of signs. More Välkky can be installed in the future, Pohjola says.
All suggestions submitted to the survey were reviewed, and a lot of information with an impact on traffic safety was also obtained from the written comments.
"With the help of the local residents' comments, we can continue planning our traffic safety work," Pohjola says gratefully.
Flashing lights are one way to draw motorists' attention to the pedestrian crossing and the pedestrians moving on it. In addition to flashing lights, it should also be remembered that the primary method is to keep the driving speed appropriate for the urban environment, so that the motorist can act in accordance with the Road Traffic Act and allow pedestrians unobstructed passage.

A flashing light is a light pole that warns drivers of a pedestrian or cyclist approaching a crosswalk. Flashing lights are carefully installed in places where there is either a busy road crossing or otherwise an increased risk of an accident, such as near schools.
The city of Imatra received ten Välkky emergency warning devices as a donation from Lähi-Tapiola Southeast Finland in 2024. The donation was part of the insurance company's nationwide traffic safety program campaign and its tax-free value is 12.285 euros.
