A protection plan was drawn up for Imatra's groundwater.
A new groundwater protection plan has been completed in Imatra.
— The aim of the plan is to secure the city's groundwater resources and prevent their pollution, says the water supply manager Kari Pietarinen from Imatran Vesi.
The plan includes instructions for land use, environmental permits and official supervision. The most important measures proposed include improving groundwater protection on the highway, studies at emission sites and groundwater monitoring at fuel distribution points.
Before the plan can be confirmed, the residents have the right to be heard.
The groundwater protection plan for the Imatra City area is available for consultation from October 1 to October 30, 2025 at the Imatra City Hall customer service point (1st floor).

The protection plan covers five groundwater areas in Imatra.
• Vesioronkangas – Class 1 groundwater area (area with significant domestic water use)
• Korvenkanta, Teppanala, Saarlampi and Lammassaari – Class 2 groundwater areas (areas that are not yet used, but can be utilized like Class 1 areas)
Important measures
The plan proposes several follow-up measures, including:
• improving groundwater protection on the highway
• studies in areas of potential emission targets
• organizing groundwater monitoring, for example at fuel distribution points
• preparing for accidents together with the rescue service
The rescue service is responsible for preventing damage that threatens groundwater.
Extensive cooperation
The protection plan was prepared in 2025 in cooperation with the City of Imatra, the Imatra Region Environmental Service and the Southeast Finland ELY Centre. Environmental Consulting Niemeläinen Oy was responsible for implementing the plan.
